It’s Not Just the Lettuce

The North Carolina cyclospora outbreak is linked to parsley and cilantro, as well as lettuce, according to an update by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (NCDHHS). While parsley and cilantro have been mentioned as possible vectors in this huge outbreak, this is the first time they have been linked to illnesses. Cyclospora is different from other foodborne pathogens.  It comes from human waste and cannot be removed by washing (although that helps some) or killed by chlorine.  It can only be removed by microfiltration or killed by heat or, maybe, ultra-violet radiation.

It needs to prevented from getting into irrigation water.

Lettuce producers have known about the Cyclospora hazard for more than a decade.  They have not acted, and neither has the government. My local store has whole cantaloupes on sale this week three for $5.00.

I don’t think they’ll sell many.

So I checked my jar and it looks like this:

My lot numbers were OK though. Plus half the jar has been eaten already and I feel fine.

For now.

Update 05.25.22

It appears Jif is everywhere.

Finally! A Recall on Hyland’s Homeopathic Teething Tablets | American Council on Science and Health

Last September, the FDA issued a news release cautioning that homeopathic teething tablets and gels may be harmful to babies and children, and issued a strong recommendation to not use them. This action was taken in response to reports of the teething products causing the illnesses of hundreds of infants and deaths of approximately ten babies. The move prompted some pharmacies to remove them from their shelves, which is great, except the bottles shouldn’t have been there in the first place. Pharmacies are not supposed to sell witchcraft.

I know, this article is not about food so why is it here?

It’s a PPSO – Personal Public Service Announcement.

Someone who I want to know about this will read it.  The link below is to the manufacturer’s website product page with a picture of the deadly product.
