More Sugar More Fat Please

The study, published online Wednesday in the journal Cell Metabolism, found eating a snack high in fat and sugar every day alters the reward circuits in human brains to create lasting preferences.

Fatty and sugary foods train your brain to hate healthier options: Yale study — New York Post, March 22, 2023

HT to Sally Feltner for the original post. Link to the original post is provided above. I’ve also credited the New York Post because I’m not sure who wrote the sentence I’ve quoted.

What I am sure about is my cerebral reward circuits still function very well if I have to choose between a piece of fruit or a cup of ice cream. Or a piece of pizza versus a salad. Or french fries rather than a plain baked potato.

Scary Charts – 05.18.23

On average, 86 percent of people surveyed for Statista’s Consumer Insights in 21 countries said that their diet contained meat โ€“ highlighting that despite the trend around meat substitutes and plant-based products, eating meat remains the norm almost everywhere in the world. To satisfy the world’s hunger for meat, 340 million tons of it were produced globally in 2021. Because meat consumption typically increases as countries grow wealthier, that number has been rising.

A Brief History of Pancakes

The first written records of pancakes come from the ancient Greeks and Romans. Around 500 B.C.E., Athenian poet Cratinus described โ€œa [flat cake] hot and shedding morning dew.โ€ Some 600 years later, in the late second century C.E., Greek physician Galen included a recipe in his On the Properties of Foodstuffs thatโ€™s similar to how Russian blinis or Canadian griddlecakes are prepared today: โ€œWhat are called girdle-cakes by the Athenians but griddle-cakes by us, the Asiatic Greeks, are prepared with olive oil alone,โ€ he wrote. โ€œThe oil is placed in a frying pan that is put on a smokeless fire, and when it has become hot the wheaten flour, soaked in a large amount of water, is poured into it.โ€ Galen noted that these sweet treats were often enjoyed with honey.

How and What to Eat to Live to 92! (the Warren Buffett diet)

The famed investor and Berkshire Hathaway CEO counts burgers, hot dogs, and ice cream among his favorite foods. He munches on McDonald’s for breakfast, guzzles five cans of Coke every day, and demolishes cookies and chocolates.

“I checked the actuarial tables, and the lowest death rate is among 6-year-olds. So I decided to eat like a 6-year-old. It’s the safest course I can take.”

Another blogger who loves chicken thighs!

Some kind and faithful readers may remember Chicken Thigh Week (vegans/vegetarians avert your eyes) which ended up becoming a week of food diary tracking and introspection. Well, welcome to the sequel.

BTW I found boneless thighs on sale for $1.69 a pound. Guess what’s going in the oven in about 15 minutes?

Cranberries

A global study looking at the benefits of cranberry products published in Cochrane Reviews has determined cranberry juice, and its supplements, reduce the risk of repeat symptomatic UTIs in women by more than a quarter, in children by more than half, and in people susceptible to UTI following medical interventions by about 53%.

UTI is short for urinary tract infection but if you are prone to these infections you already knew that.
